The "is" sort of shaped the status and gave it some type of standard. I never get any use out of it though because I don't login enough. If I did, it would say something I was doing last week. Some of my friends continue to use it but I'd say only about 20% of them. An overwhelming majority of people have continued to use 'is' in their status. Some are mildly annoyed that they have to type it.
