Selflessness is something we could all learn and I think it's good that you are openly admitting your faults. That's the first step towards progression.

Re: The Most Important Lesson I Learned As A Community Manager

Being Selfless ..so very true. Infact, if you just focus on this single most important trait everything falls in its own right. In essense this is the pure trait of a true karma yogi

Re: The Most Important Lesson I Learned As A Community Manager

Great post. I really think someone should write a book about this subject. Human relationships are constantly dissected offline but what is needed is a bit of analization and understanding about how we related to one another ONline. Community Managers are almost like therapists (okay, a bit of a stretch but when you think about the general responsibilities of being a community manager - therapist of the community doesn't seem so far fetched). Thanks again for the post (would love to see a series on this topic)!

Re: The Most Important Lesson I Learned As A Community Manager

Loved this post! Community management is something I'm really into (though not something that I necessarily do). It's great to hear from it first hand.

Re: The Most Important Lesson I Learned As A Community Manager

Great article, focusing on the selfless makes a lot of sense.

Re: The Most Important Lesson I Learned As A Community Manager

I'm fascinated by your lessons in this brand new role. I think the community manager position is going to be one of the most important, yet misunderstood roles in most organizations, and we're just now developing best practices as we fly by the seat of our pants!

Leave it to RWW to support your efforts, and thank goodness you're blogging about it. Thank you!

Re: The Most Important Lesson I Learned As A Community Manager

Corvida, I too am a new community manager, and it's hard to figure out what exactly people want in order to give it to them! I'm not in the position of a known blogger or other tech figure, so I don't have those possible misconceptions, but I still have days when I sit here wondering how I can bring more value to people. I think it's something that really broadens your horizons outside of the internet as well in terms of learning to listen to what others are talking about.

Re: The Most Important Lesson I Learned As A Community Manager

Being selfless may be "going a bit far", but I will admit that actually listening to people is tremendously hard. Hearing the words is one thing, understanding the words is completely different.

Re: The Most Important Lesson I Learned As A Community Manager

Thanks for sharing your observations on this growing role. Being selfless is probably something that would help in more situations than not. Can you imagine if the Wall St. CEOs practiced a little of that? How different the world would be!

sean808080
http://sean808080.com
